Latics target Scandinavian Fans

A scheme begins next week to encourage Scandinavian fans who follow Premier League teams to make npower League One Oldham Athletic their 'second club' in England.

There are many fans from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland who visit the North West every weekend for Premier League games and Latics are seeking to use this to increase its fan base.

On production of a Scandinavian passport and a match ticket for a Premier League game, admission will be for £5 and there will also be a discount of 20-per-cent in the club shop. For groups there will be also be an opportunity to meet Paul Dickov and his Latics coaching staff.

Director Mike Newton, who is running the scheme, said: "When I was working recently in Scandinavia, I saw how vast the interest in English football was.

"There are huge numbers who come over for Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool games, many of which are on a Sunday, and we would like to encourage people to come and watch us on the Saturday.

"We are a traditional club in a traditional stadium and can offer our guests from Scandinavia a chance to see the type of good, old-fashioned game that has largely gone away elsewhere in England."

Latics have Scandinavian links via players past and present, Norwegians Gunnar Halle, Tore Pedersen and Ole Bjorn Sundgot, and currently Shefki Kuqi who has played 62 times for Finland and appeared in the Champions League group stages for Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi.

The scheme kicks off for next Saturday's visit of Chesterfield and will run for all the remaining home league games.
